These are some common questions our leaders hear from our moms. You’re always welcome to contact a leader with further questions.
Q: What are the meetings for?
A: Group meetings are where La Leche League Leaders and other mothers share experiences, give suggestions and offer support and encouragement. Our meetings are ideal for learning from and making friends with other mothers. Meetings provide time for mother-to-mother sharing in a friendly and accepting atmosphere.
Q: I need help and can’t wait until the meeting! What should I do?
A: You don’t need to wait until a meeting if you need breastfeeding support. Contact one of our leaders for support as needed.
Q: Do I have to be a LLL member to receive breastfeeding support or attend meetings?
A: Its not required that you be a member to seek help or attend a meeting. Our mission is to help mothers our community to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, encouragement, information, and education. However, we are a membership-supported organization and highly encourage those who find meetings/support to be a benefit to join our community by becoming a member. Dues are only $25/year and help support the operations of the LLL group to help provide breastfeeding support in our local community.
Q: What is discussed at meetings?
A: We rotate through a series of breastfeeding topics, however every meeting is different and the questions of the attendees are always given top priority. We have a series of meeting topics that include:
- The Advantages of Breastfeeding. Mothers are amazed to hear about the many remarkable qualities of human milk, their bodies fantastic ability to produce milk as well as the positive impact breastfeeding has on families, the environment and society.
- The Baby Arrives: The Family and the Breastfeeding Baby. This meeting focuses on the first six weeks and offers tips to make the transition into being a family as smooth as possible.
- The Art of Breastfeeding: Overcoming Challenges. Leaders and mothers have excellent ideas to help mothers overcome roadblocks that may impede breastfeeding progress.
- Nutrition and Weaning. Pregnant women enjoy this topic so they can optimize their unborn baby’s health. Mothers learn how to start solids for their babies. Nutritious options for family meals are shared.
Q: Who should attend?
A: Women interested in breastfeeding are welcome. Meetings are typically attended by expectant, new and experienced mothers and their babies.
Q: What is a LLL meeting like?
A: We usually start the meetings with introductions and ask mothers to share any questions. Usually there is an open discussion to help address issues raised. Mothers may receive one-on-one help from a leader if needed.
Q: I’m pregnant. Should I attend even if I’m not breastfeeding yet?
A: Absolutely. Women are encouraged to begin attending meetings when they are pregnant or before, if they are interested! Attending early in a pregnancy gives mothers plenty of time to learn as much as possible about the “womanly art of breastfeeding”
Q: Do I need to RSVP?
A: Meetings are open and no RSVP is required. If you are interested in learning more about breastfeeding or getting support, please call a leader or join us at one of our monthly meetings.
Q: Can my husband attend?
A: We do occasionally have fathers come but not often. Some moms are uncomfortable nursing in front of men they don’t know, while others do not have an issue. For many moms, coming to a LLL meeting is the very first time they have breastfed outside of their home. If you would like for your husband to attend, it would be helpful if he is aware if some moms are feeling a bit nervous.
Q: What else can I do to prepare for breastfeeding?
A: We highly recommend reading La Leche League’s book, The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding (8th Edition) to learn more about breastfeeding. The book is a comprehensive resource that provides valuable breastfeeding information in a chronological order, and includes a section on “tech support” to help troubleshoot challenges. Father are absolutely a critical part of the support for a breastfeeding mom, so dads should be encouraged to read the book too!
Q: What are benefits of joining LLL?
A: There are tangible and intangible benefits of joining LLL. You’ll have the opportunity to meet new people in your community and gain self confidence as you learn from other mothers. Breastfeeding is an investment in yourself and your child. Research indicates significant value to infants, mothers, families and the environment from breastfeeding. Additionally, you’ll have access to monthly meetings, the group library, and telephone help. LLL members also receive the e-newsletter copy of Breastfeeding Today.
